The vineyards and olive yards of l'Empordà

This week’s itinerary covers the Empordà, passing by its most typical sceneries of coast and interior, and especially dedicated to the culture of the vineyards and the olive trees. In Baix Empordà we visit small areas dedicated to the vineyard, with artesan wine vaults, as well as a fantastic installation with wines from all over the world. We also visit the rice-field area of Pals and the rice-mill. In this area you can visit some dairies. In the plain of Alt Empordà a modern agricultural development of olive trees is visited with very modern olive oil production. The last two days the scenery changes completely, crossing the relieved zone at the foot of the massif of the Alberes, where you find the traditional culture of the vineyard and the olive trees, with a great number of agrarian co-operatives where they elaborate the wines of Denomination of origin Empordà-Costa-Brava and a traditional oil mill. In Vilajuiga a modern agrarian development is visited with elaboration of wines of recognized prestige. We offer bike hire.

Day 1: Arrival at Girona
Hotel lies at walking distance from Girona train station. You can also take a taxi (own costs). You can round off the day by visiting the old part of this historical city, where the cathedral, the remains of walls and the Jewish quarter are very outstanding. We also recommend a stroll along the Ramblas. Lodging in the city centre (B&B)

Day 2: Madremanya - Calella de Palafrugell
Transfer from Girona to Madremanya where the route starts. This route takes us from Madremanya to the coast, passing through a large number of medieval settlements: Cruilles, Peratallada, Ullastret, Palau Sator. We will pay a visit to La Bisbal d'Empordà with its medieval castle and Ceramics Museum. We will take you to the modern wine vault of Mas Oller in the village of Torrent. Lunch picnic in the cellar Mas Oller with wine tasting (guided tour). Accommodation in the old fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell, a lovely place that still retains its original charm.

Day 3: Calella de Palafrugell - Calella de Palafrugell
Circular route along the coast of Calella. We leave southbound, rounding the wooded area of Cap Roig and visiting the lovely Castell cove, with its Iberian settlement. Lunch picnic in Cala Castell (guided tour). We will take you to visit the small artisan wine cellar of Can Sais visit their vineyards. The route continues until arriving at Palamós with its fishing port and a good gastronomy. We return along a nice path that leads us to Palafrugell, where we can see a great number of watchtowers built as protection against pirate raids. In Palafrugell we will visit the “Vins i Licors Grau”, a magnificent large wine store.

Day 4: Calella de Palafrugell - Torroella de Montgrí
We go through a rural area with lovely villages, such as the medieval settlement of Pals, which permits you to enjoy a magnificent view of the region. We go through a nice area of marshes and rice fields and visit an authentic rice mill. The route goes to Torroella de Montgrí, an interesting village with an outstanding medieval castle. Lodging in a lovely ****hotel, especially for cyclists.

Day 5: Torroella de Montgrí - Castelló d’Empúries
Northbound route, where along a lovely coastal path we will reach the famous ruins of Empúries and the historical medieval complex of St. Martí d'Empúries. Lunch picnic in Sant Martí d’Empúries (guided tour) We visit a modern olive tree exploitation and manufacturer of high quality olive oil Aceites Dauro.).Accommodation in the centre of Castelló d’Empuries, an important medieval settlement.

Day 6: Castelló d’Empúries - Castelló d’Empúries
We visit the villages of Pau, Palau-Savardera, with traditional wine vaults in which we can visit the wine vaults and taste wines of the area. In Pau we can also visit the oil mill. We will take you to the regional wine cellars of “Celler Espelt” in Vilajuiïga. We visit a zone of the Nature Reserve of Wetlands “Aiguamolls de l'Empordà” Lunch picnic in the Nature Reserve of Vilaüt. (Guided tour).

Day 7: Castelló d’Empúries - Figueres
Route through the best vineyard landscapes and centennial olive trees at the foot of the Alberes massive. We visit the village of Espolla, with its magnificent scenery of vineyards and olive trees fields. We visit the Vinícola Co-operative of Espolla. Lunch picnic in the olive tree fields (guided tour). We complete the tour, passing by the village of Cabanes, where we visit the oldest olive mill of the region and the village of Vilabertran with its interesting Romanesque monastery. Lodging in the city centre of Figueres; here we can visit the famous Theatre-Museum Dalí and buy wine in small wine cellars. On the last evening you have a typical Empordà dinner.

In Figueres we can visit the famous Theatre-Museum Dalí and buy wine in small wine cellars. Departure from Figueres train station, at walking distance from the hotel. Hotel staff can call a taxi for you. (own costs)
